Huineng (638–713) is a seminal figure in Buddhism, the Sixth Patriarch of Chan (Seon, Zen) Buddhism. He is credited with transforming Seon (Zen) into a major force in East Asian Buddhism by shifting focus from intellectual study and meditation techniques to the
direct, intuitive insight of one’s own "Buddha nature".
Korean Seon (선), Jogye Sect (조계종), is known to have directly come from and followed his teaching.
The following passage from the Diamond Sutra is said to have helped Huineng achieve enlightenment.
One must naturally generate a mind without dwelling on form. One must generate a mind without dwelling on sound, smell, taste, feeling, or thought. One must, above all, generate a mind without attachment.
