부처님이 외아들 라훌라의 출가 생활을 바른 길로 이끌고 가르침을 펼치신 대표적인 경전은 초기불전의 Majjhima Nikāya에 수록된 세 가지 경전입니다.
The representative sutras through which the Buddha guided his only son Rahula’s monastic life on the right path and expounded his teachings are the three sutras recorded in the 'Majjhima Nikāya' of the early Buddhist sutras.
1. 암발랏티까에서 라훌라를 교계한 경 (MN 61), 일곱 살에 출가한 어린 라훌라가 장난으로라도 거짓말을 하지 않도록 엄격하게 훈계하고 가르친 경전입니다.
1. The Sutra of Instructing Rahula at Ambalattika (MN 61). This is a scripture in which young Rahula, who had renounced the world at the age of seven, was strictly instructed and taught not to tell lies, even as a joke.
거울의 비유: 거울이 자신을 비추어보는 용도인 것처럼, 말과 행동 그리고 마음을 쓰기 전에 항상 선한지 악한지 되풀이하여 성찰(반조)하라고 가르치셨습니다.
The Parable of the Mirror: Just as a mirror is used to reflect oneself, He taught that before using words, actions, or thoughts, one should always repeatedly reflect on whether they are good or evil.
물의 비유: 물그릇에 남은 한 방울의 물처럼 진실성이 없는 자의 수행도 그와 같이 가볍고 하찮다고 비유하시며 진실함의 중요성을 강조하셨습니다.
Parable of Water: He emphasized the importance of sincerity by likening the conduct of one who lacks sincerity to a single drop of water remaining in a bowl, stating that it is just as light and insignificant.
2. 라훌라를 교계한 긴 경 (MN 62)라훌라가 열여덟 살 사미 시절에 붓다를 따라 탁발하며 수행할 때 설하신 경전입니다.
2. The Long Sutra on Instructing Rahula (MN 62) This is a scripture preached to Rahula when he was eighteen years old, during his time as a novice monk, while he was following the Buddha on alms-gathering practice.
몸(물질)과 느낌, 인식, 형성, 의식 등 오온(五蘊)을 해체하여 관찰하고, "이것은 내 것이 아니며, 내가 아니며, 나의 자아가 아니다"라고 있는 그대로 통찰할 것을 가르치셨습니다.
He taught Rahula to deconstruct and observe the Five Aggregates—body (matter), feeling, perception, formation, and consciousness—and to gain insight into them as they are, stating, "This is not mine, it is not me, and it is not my self."
땅, 물, 불, 바람의 4대 요소와 무상(無常)에 대한 명상, 그리고 호흡을 관찰하는 아나빠나사띠(Anāpānasati)의 중요성을 강조하셨습니다.
He emphasized the importance of meditation on the four elements of earth, water, fire, and wind, as well as impermanence, and Anapanasati, which involves observing the breath.
자애, 연민, 기쁨, 평온의 네 가지 명상(사무량심)을 닦으라고 당부하셨습니다.
He urged Rahula to practice the four immeasurable minds: loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity.
3. 라훌라를 교계한 짧은 경 (MN 147)
3. The Short Scripture of Instructing Rahula (MN 147)
모든 감각 기관과 대상, 느낌 등이 무상하고 조건 지어진 것임을 철저히 해체하여 관찰하도록 이끄는 가르침입니다.
It is a teaching that leads to the thorough deconstruction and observation that all sensory organs, objects, and feelings are impermanent and conditioned.
라훌라가 부처님의 이 짧은 법문을 듣고 모든 번뇌를 소멸하여 아라한(최고의 깨달음을 얻은 성자)의 경지에 이르렀음을 기록하고 있습니다.
It is recorded that upon hearing this short Dharma discourse by the Buddha, Rahula extinguished all defilements and attained the state of an Arhat (one who has attained the highest enlightenment).

Nikaya: M61
1. 이와 같이 나는 들었다. 한때 세존께서는 라자가하에 대나무 숲 다람쥐 보호구역에 머무셨다. 세존께서는 해거름에 낮 동안의 홀로 앉음에서 일어나셔서 암발랏티까(죽림정사)로 라훌라 존자를 만나러 가셨다.
1. Thus I have heard. At one time, the World-Honored One was staying in the Squirrel Sanctuary in the Bamboo Grove in Rajagaha. At dusk, the World-Honored One rose from his solitary sitting during the day and went to Ambalattika (the Bamboo Grove Monastery) to meet Venerable Rahula.
2. 라훌라 존자는 세존께서 오시는 것을 보고는 자리를 마련하고 발 씻을 물을 준비하였다. 세존께서는 마련된 자리에 앉으셔서 발을 씻으셨다.
2. When Rahula saw the World-Honored One approaching, he prepared a seat and water for washing his feet. The World-Honored One sat on the prepared seat and washed his feet.
3. 세존께서는 물그릇에 물을 조금 남기시고 라훌라 존자에게 물으셨다.
3. The World-Honored One left a little water in the bowl and asked Venerable Rahula.
“라훌라야, 너는 이 물그릇에 물이 조금 남아있는 것을 보느냐?”
“Rahullah, do you see that there is a little water left in this water vessel?”
“그렇습니다, 세존이시여.”
“Yes, World-Honored One.”
“라훌라야, 고의로 거짓말하는 것을 조금도 부끄러워하지 않는 자들의 출가수행이란 것도 이와 같이 조금 남은 하찮은 것에 지나지 않는다.”
“Rahula, the monastic practice of those who feel no shame whatsoever in deliberately lying is also nothing more than this meager, insignificant thing.”
4. 세존께서는 그 조금 남은 물을 쏟아버리시고 라훌라 존자에게 물으셨다.
4. The World-Honored One poured out the little remaining water and asked Venerable Rahula.
“라훌라야, 너는 그 조금 남은 물이 버려진 것을 보느냐?
“Rahula, do you see that the little remaining water has been wasted?
“그렇습니다, 세존이시여.”
“Yes, World-Honored One.”
“라훌라야, 고의로 거짓말하는 것을 전혀 부끄러워하지 않는 자들의 출가수행이란 것도 이와 같이 버려진 것에 지나지 않는다.”
“Rahula, the renunciation of those who feel no shame at all in deliberately lying is nothing more than something abandoned in this way.”
5. 세존께서는 그 물그릇을 뒤집어엎으시고 라훌라 존자에게 물으셨다.
5. The World-Honored One turned the water bowl upside down and asked Venerable Rahula.
“라훌라야, 너는 이 물그릇이 엎어진 것을 보느냐?
“Rahula, do you see that this water vessel is overturned?
“그렇습니다, 세존이시여.”
“Yes, World-Honored One.”
“라훌라야, 고의로 거짓말하는 것을 전혀 부끄러워하지 않는 자들의 출가수행이란 것도 이와 같이 엎어진 것에 지나지 않는다.”
“Rahula, the monastic practice of those who feel no shame at all in deliberately lying is nothing more than a collapse like this.”

라훌라 존자는 석가모니 부처님의 외아들로서 부처님이 출가하시던 날 태어났습니다. 세존께서 깨달음을 증득하신 지 2∼3년 뒤에 부친 숫도다나(쟁반) 왕의 간청으로 고향 까삘라왓투를 방문했을 때 일곱 살이었던 라훌라 존자가 부처님의 가사 자락을 잡고 유산의 상속을 요청하자 세존께서 법의 총사령관인 사리뿟따 존자(사리불)에게 라훌라의 은사가 되어줄 것을 부탁하여, 라훌라 존자는 일곱 살 때 사리불을 스승으로 모셔 출가하셨다고 합니다.
Venerable Rahula was the only son of Shakyamuni Buddha and was born on the day the Buddha renounced the world. It is said that two or three years after the World-Honored One attained enlightenment, when he visited his hometown of Kapilavastu at the request of his father, King Suddhodana, Venerable Rahula, who was seven years old at the time, grasped the hem of the Buddha's robe and requested to inherit the estate. The World-Honored One then asked Venerable Sariputta, the Chief Dharma Instructor, to become Rahula's teacher, and thus, Venerable Rahula renounced the world at the age of seven, taking Sariputta as his teacher.
세존께서는 라훌라를 출가시키면서 어린 그에게 “다시는 세상에 태어나지 말라.”고 간곡한 말씀을 하셨다고 합니다.
It is said that when the World-Honored One ordained Rahula, He earnestly told the young boy, “Never be born into this world again.”
